The Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) participates in water-related endangered species initiatives and programs for the benefit and protection of water users in Colorado.
- Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program
-
The CWCB participates in the Glen Canyon Adaptive Management Program which seeks to develop dam operations and other management activities to protect and enhance the natural resources of the Colorado River ecosystem in the Grand Canyon. Glen Canyon Dam operations allow Colorado and the three other Upper Colorado River Basin states to comply with the provisions of the Colorado River Compact. In this way, Colorado is able to operate its water facilities independently in a manner that best meets the needs of Colorado’s citizens.
More information about the program is available at the Adaptive Management Program Website.
- Platte River Recovery Implementation Program
-
The Platte River Recovery Implementation Program (PRRIP) is an agreement between the states of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming and the U.S. Department of the Interior, with two primary goals:
1. To maintain, improve and conserve habitat for four target species found on the Platte River in Central Nebraska: the endangered whooping crane, interior least tern and pallid sturgeon, and the threatened piping plover.
2. To enable existing and new water uses in the Platte River Basin to proceed without additional Endangered Species Act requirements.
For additional information about the program, including governance documents, visit the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program Website or listen to CWCB's Podcast Episode, 3 Birds and a Fish.
Please also check out our Platte River Recovery Program Story Map for more details on Colorado's Role in the Program.

The native Species Conservation Trust Fund (SCTF) was created in 1998, pursuant to HB 98-1006 (C.R.S. 24-33-111). The SCTF supports programs and studies dedicated to recovering threatened and endangered species, including the recovery and protection of federal candidate species and conducting scientific research relating to listing or delisting species.
